Denial is a psychological mechanism that people utilize to subconsciously not deal with a difficulty in life they may be experiencing. Denial is frequently seen in the elderly when that person begins to lose some of their cognitive and/or physical abilities and they do not want to admit these vulnerabilities to themselves, family and friends. As a result, they can continue to lead a lifestyle which may be unsafe and unhealthy. Some examples are decreased vision, hearing and strength, memory deficits, unsafe driving habits, and medication and healthcare non-compliance. | Ageing | Life Transitions | Depression is a mood disorder which frequently accompanies the ageing process. It is understandable that as we become aware and accept the fact that we may not be able to function as we did when we were younger, and may have medical problems as well, we may experience sadness, isolation, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, crying, lethargy, and a lack of motivation. The good news I have to offer is that there are very effective medications which can help with these symptoms of ageing, which combined with cognitive therapy, can reduce symptoms of depression. Frequently individuals I have worked with become more physically active, thereby increasing their physical as well as mental health. | Anger | Sleep Disorders | Mood Disorders | |
