Life is a series of changes and choices and sometimes we feel that we just cannot keep up with all the demands placed upon us. Think about this: it is unrealistic to expect that we would live our entire lives without ever having a cold, the flu, a sore throat or other common medical problems. Most of the time, we’re able to fight off infections and stay healthy. But other times, we’re overtired, over-stressed, and not eating well, and if our immune system is below par, we just get sick. As much as we don’t like to admit this, it’s a basic fact of life. It’s like our bodies are saying to us “Hey, slow down and listen to me, you’re not taking good care of me…I’m going to get sick if you don’t pay attention to what I’m saying”. The mind and body are inextricably connected, so why do we accept occasional bodily illnesses but refuse to “listen” to those emotional “red flags” warning us that we’re about to take a psychological nose dive? It’s easy to become overwhelmed today with so many external pressures and expectations placed on us by others, as well as ourselves. Frequent signs of anxiety and depression are experienced by many people over the course of their lives and are not a sign of weakness. In fact, it takes personal strength to stop and recognize that things may not be the way we want them to be. Many times, people wonder if their feelings are unique to them or if everyone feels like they do. If these thoughts and feelings sound like you, perhaps you should stop and consider if you are in “emotional overload” now, much the same as you occasionally get a cold, flu, etc. The difference is that the overload is psychological rather than physical. Since the mind and body do work together, if left untreated, the emotional overload may well become physical as a result of a compromised immune system. Stop worrying about not feeling happy and do something about it. You can contact me for a free 5 minute introduction about telephone or online therapy.
